︎ Press Release
The act of shedding another’s skin is one of release and distancing from a personal past; in shedding an exterior layer of the body, the subject’s past-self becomes emotionally estranged and materially dissociated from the present. This exhibition documents an encounter with personal moments in the artists’ past, particularly those arising out of altered or heightened emotional states. Together, the works depict a push and pull between the immediate and estranged moment of emotional shedding. Van Hoorne’s paintings are the visualisation of a series of climactic emotive outpourings, painted during instances of explosive expression.

The emotively charged moment is preserved by the immediacy of Van Hoorn’s brushstrokes. His paintings capture the distinct mental states felt in each act of emotional shedding. Bradley’s photographic works depict an equivocal past that has become estranged through reconfiguration and ‘ambiguation.’In these autobiographical photos, the act of shedding is carried out through a series of metamorphoses, each of which fracture a greater rift between the past and present self. Over time, this schism becomes so vast and clouded that the subject experiences emotional and material disembodiment, marking a transition from the self to another.
